Middle School Observation

I will be observing a seven-year-old child for my project. What I have learned from being a parent and watching my kids as they grow up the social emotional, physical and intellectual changes that occur in children between birth and the end of adolescence are that they all progress at individual intervals from dependency to increasing individualism. For my observation, I observed a first to third grade special day class at a public Fresno Unified School District classroom in Fresno, California. When I first entered the classroom all the students, approximately 10 students, were sitting down on the rug in front of the class as the teacher was reading a short story to them. When she finished they would go over their reading assignment.

I observed a sixth grade classroom (eleven to twelve years of age) at a middle school in Ringgold, Georgia. The classroom seemed to be fairly even in regards to how many children of each sex were in the classroom. The majority of the students were white with a few african american and hispanic children among the mix. The sixth grade classes did not have enough employees to only teach one subject therefore, the teacher that I observed taught language arts and mathematics. The first thing you notice when you walk into the classroom is the mathematical shapes all along the upper wall like a wallpaper border. The first thing on the agenda of my visit was my official tour of the school. As I walked around the main campus I began to picture myself as part of the pack. With each new building I saw, the more I fell in love with the school. Everything from the glowing red-bricked education buildings to the exquisite student building, Talley Student Union. After I had walked the magnificent campus, it was time for my meeting with the head coach, Bryan Bunn. I had never met Coach Bunn or even talked to him, only email. I attended Rudd Middle summers school program for EL students. I witnessed students from 3rd grade to high school students. The location of Rudd Middle School is within the city limits of Pinson, Alabama. Rudd Middle School is one of 9 middles schools within the Jefferson County Board of Education. Pinson, Alabama exact location is 33°41′11″N 86°40′55″W/ 33.68639°N 86.68194°W. Pinson is approximately 7 square miles. Rudd Middle School is a rural community. You can find the school surrounded by a nicely laid out neighborhood. The school has a small town community feel to it. The technical building is an older structure that seems to need to be replaced in the near futrure. The classrooms were average, but many of the instructors were

Out of all of my community service efforts, Volunteering at Travis Middle School is how I give back to my community. The athletic program at Travis Middle School taught me perseverance and discipline, coach Eric Casas being a huge factor.

For this scenario, I am a general education 6th grade math teacher, at the amazing campus of Our Lady of the Lake Middle School. The school that I work for has 8 periods each day, and I teach 6 out of those 8 periods. The classes do range for each period, but I roughly have 23 students in each class and with a diverse set of students; Hispanic (50.1%), White (40.8%), Black (4.8%), two or more races (3.1%), Asian (1%), and Pacific Islander (.2%). At Our Lady of the Lake Middle School the student’s population is broken down to 46% females and 54% males that attend the school. Socioeconomic details for the school is broken down to; eligible free lunch (43.3%), eligible fore reduced lunch (8.2%), and ineligible for free/reduced lunch (48.5%).

The purpose of this paper is to locate, observe, and collect information on a school-aged child between the ages of six and 17 in different settings. Once the child is identified, a pseudonym will be assigned to the child. The child will be observed on his development, to include: school performance, emotional characteristics, social characteristics, cognitive characteristics, motivational characteristics, self-concept, interests, language development, moral development, and health. Also, the child will be placed in proper development stages according to theories based on the work of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erickson, and Kohlberg. The goal of this paper is to develop a comprehensive portrait of the subject.

From kindergarten to tenth grade, I attended local public schools in my neighborhood. A few steps down a sidewalk was my morning commute for the entirety of elementary school. I grew complacent as I entered high school, as after ten years both the social and educational offerings of public school became monotonous. A sizable challenge, full of uncertainty and potential opportunity, was what I craved. Thus, I transferred to Holy Names Academy in the fall of my junior year after my parents became accustomed to the idea. When I informed others of this decision, many were taken aback that I desired to transfer to an all-girls high school, rooted in an unfamiliar faith in order to challenge my point of view and pursue an exceptional education. Yet,

I believe that the 15 year old high school boy should do community service. He needs to understand what he did and the consequences of his actions. He needs to be punished not thru time in jail or money or physically getting hurt. He should have to have 100 hours doing firefighter volunteering and helping out at a community center as well.

During Middle School I was invited to my first sleepover by my neighbor Kayla. My precept of a sleep over was doing the same nightly routine one would at home, but within another household. I was over enthusiastic like a child getting ready for a field trip to a museum they’d been to a dozen times. I arranged everything from my clothes to my toothpaste. The only thing left was to ask for permission. When I brought up the subject to my mom, her response was “ Why would you rather sleep at a strangers than comfortable in your own home?” In my ten year old mind I thought, “she wouldn’t understand.” Its not out of the ordinary for parents to be wary and strict when it comes to their children.

To assemble the sculpture, I firstly cut off two side flaps of the cardboard box using a sharp knife and discarded them both. Next, I cut two holes roughly the same size into the box to form the shape of eyes. I selected their position so they could be roughly equidistant to the imaginary vertical line down the centre of the box. After that, I glued a red nightcap between the two remaining flaps of the box. Then, I inserted one energy-saver light bulb into each hole that I carved for the eyes. This was followed by the action of gluing (using liquid glue) the circular end of the melon ball scooper above the red nightcap. I also inserted eleven pins in a crescent shape near the bottom of the box. Moreover, I glued a black scarf on the top of the box, leaving two large portions of the scarf unglued at both ends. Lastly, I stuffed Styrofoam into the interior of a graduation cap and then placed liquid glue on the Styrofoam to glue it onto the black scarf on the top of the box.

Jose requires routines and consistency throughout his school day. For instance, when I handed him a blue marker instead of the black one he got really loud and refused to do math the rest of class. When things are not as he would like them, he reacts with yelling and stating what he wants. He can become frustrated with both staff and students when he is not able to verbally express himself. He as an attention span for about 20 minutes and built in breaks are helpful for him. He usually requests break activities that are active. A visual timer is helpful for him to transition. In the past a visual schedule, first next card and social stories have been tried.

Why read the news in a world filled with “mean world syndrome” that will always leave you feeling pessimistic and depressed at the things that are occurring in the world? This question has come to my mind a great deal of times. I was able to learn about this topic specifically in my high school journalism class. While thinking about what I learned in journalism class and the positive writing experiences that went along with that, I chose a piece of writing that incorporates those joyful moments in that class as well as great memories about the success my brothers and I had on Community Nights. My brothers and I have always taken pride in being fourth generation students at Eastern Christian High School and third generation athletes. It was our mission to help people realize what a privilege it is go to a private Christian school even though it might not be considered “cool” by their friends who go to the local public schools. During field placement this year I will be located at multiply sites. To begin the week, James Harding High School is allowing me to conduct a group with the freshman basketball team. The team consists of on average fourteen and eighteen old young athletes, mostly male with one female player. The opportunity to be part of a group of young students of color is a deeply meaningful experience for me because they are facing some parallel choices and journeys to that of my upbringing. It is my belief that all adolescence faces similar choices and tribulation like bullying, drugs, peer-pressure, puberty etc. J.J. Arnett summed this period of adolescent evolution quite perfectly as “Storm and Stress”, not only for the youth but for their caretakers as well. High school is a pivotal time for findings my own identity and the young men in the group are going through similar angst I remember facing.
