According to the 2010 Plan for the Future of the New York City Family Court, the main goal of family court relies on ensuring “the highest standard of justice for each and every litigant who enters the courthouse” (2010). This is done by executing a sequence of processes and by providing different resources to individuals involved in the case. There are three major organizations that serve an important role in Family Court. These organizations ensure justice for individuals entering the family court system by providing a variety of different services. These organizations include the Administration for Children’s Services, the Legal Aid Society and the Panel of 18b Attorneys. Each of the three organizations mentioned, work to ensure the welfare of children and service to families by providing a variety of different services.

They gain access to programs and services after they get settled in, such as rehabilitation programs, on the job training, and a social worker assigned specifically to them. These programs and services are completely voluntary and by no means required by the resident. “Through housing-first, Utah reduced its chronically-homeless population 72 percent between 2005 and 2014.” (Semuels) This statistic shows that housing-first would be a very fast and effective solution to the United States’ homelessness problem. Another way the US could cut down on homeless people is to require developers to provide both permanent supportive housing and low-income housing in their buildings. This is a solution because homes can be made available to a larger part of the population. This kind of mixed-use housing helps create communities made up of different individuals who in turn look out for one another, for example, “in one building in Harlem, single moms living in affordable housing helped out the ex-cons living in supportive housing, and vice versa.” (Semuels)

South Metro Human Services is a community center is a non profit organization in Saint Paul Minnesota that has been established since 1987 but was founded a year earlier. (South Metro Human Services, 2015). This agency assists with treatment centers, job readiness, mental health counseling for children and adults, DBT(Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), CADI waiver program for adults and children. All these services assist the individuals that come to this community center with the tools to be effective in their community as well in their personal lives.

The Transitional Living Program was designed to promote a transition for these clients to self sufficient living and prevent long-term dependency on social services. Another strength of this policy both micro and macro is that in 2008 when changes were occurring to the preliminaries of the act, the length of stay was increased in the shelters from 14-21 days and in the Transitional Housing Program from 18-21 months. This amount of time stated in the RHYA for an individual’s stay originally worried me only because what if the client’s needs were not met by this deadline what happens next? On the macro level this extension of time gives the agencies more time for implementation of services and programs. Agencies must try there hardest to not turn away any clients, because it could possibly come across as discrimination. It was rewarding to learn that these agencies are well equipped with information and techniques for the various people inquiring about services. As the National Alliance to End Homelessness states the United States served over 500,000 homeless youth in 2005. But the Department of Human Health Services reported that 2,500 people were turned away from agencies and shelters due to the lack of bed space. If I were a major stakeholder or beneficiary of this Act, I would be concerned that not all people in need are getting what they deserve. Over the two years the veteran will no longer be homeless but also will learn how to attain stability in their jobs, have a steady income, advance skills, receive treatments for mental and addictive disorders, and to be have to integrate from being in the service to civilian life (Tsai, 2013). In regards to SAHP collaborations within the homeless care arena include the Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County, the Presbyterian Night Shelter, the Salvation Army, and the Day Resource Center. The above collaborators currently offer day-to-day temporary shelter and providing more basic and immediate needs, a continuous source of clients, and begin the process of self-sufficiency for the clients. The SAHP agency offers purposeful transitional housing designed to continue what these shelters initiated. Through more intensive individualized case management and more demanding financial literacy, the SAHP agency seeks to complete the efforts of these other shelters and collectively work to end chronic homelessness in the Lancaster

Urban Ministries of Wake County’s mission statement is “advocating for those affected by poverty.” In this case, they are aligning with their mission. For about 35 years, they have met the critical needs for their community and each year they have to serve more than 27,000 low-income of Wake County residents. They have been helping the community by providing basic needs such as food, medicine and shelter. Furthermore, they help clients to build a higher quality of life.

To begin with, it is important to start with the fact that more than half a million people in the United States are homeless and forced to live on the streets and either sleep in an unsheltered location, or at a housing project (emergency shelters, short-term transitional housing, or safe havens). Moreover, according to a Social Solutions’ article (2016), 15% of the homeless population are individuals who have experienced homelessness for a period longer than a year (chronic homelessness). It is because of those facts about homelessness that I had decided to volunteer at a faith-based temporary overnight shelter and subsequently record my experiences and what I observed during my visit.
