It takes great skills to trick people like, clever, mischievous, and wise; In William Shakespeare’s play, King Lear and Gloucester are known to be tricked by their children. The similarities between these two characters are, they got betrayed by their children, disowned loyal people in their lives and failure to see reality. Firstly, Lear lets his ungrateful daughters take over his throne and turn their backs on their now powerless father. On the other hand, Gloucester is deceived by his dishonest son into thinking that Edgar wants him dead, but in both cases, it is the exact opposite. Shakespeare uses characterisation to show that his protagonist prides himself on being as respected as his younger self; others use this to manipulate and betray him. Lear divides his kingdom based on flattery rather than any logical sense. Lear banishes his youngest daughter, Cordelia, for refusing to flatter him like her sisters and Shakespeare uses animal imagery to show arrogant Lear is, ‘come not between a dragon [Lear] and his wrath [Cordelia]’. His pride ultimately allows him to be manipulated and betrayed by his other daughters, Goneril and Regan, who banish him. Shakespeare uses irony to show that through this betrayal allows his madness to give him an ironic insight into how his pride has blinded him from seeing the state of his kingdom, as Lear says ‘O’ I have ta’en too little care of this [the kingdom]’.
King Lear's fool is undoubtedly one of the wisest characters in the play. He is not only able to accurately analyze a situation which many other characters are blind to, but he is also able to foreshadow the actions of many characters and many other incidents to come. The main instruction the fool gives to the king is to beware of doing things that are unnatural, such as giving his inheritance, (splitting his kingdom among his daughters) to his daughters before he his dead. By doing this unnaturally, Lear must face many adverse consequences, such as losing his identity, self-worth, and respect from his daughters.
One’s downfall may be caused by many factors, such as an individual’s traits. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden’s cynical behaviour towards those around him causes him to see his classmates around him in a negative perspective. Similarly, in King Lear, King Lear’s attitude towards his honest daughter, Cordelia causes him to banish his most-loving and caring daughter away from England. In the play King Lear by William Shakespeare, the Earl of Gloucester and King Lear both experienced a shift in their power and influence. Since Lear began the play with higher power he appeared to have experienced more loss. These two characters are foils of one another making their journey of power similar, a major theme in this play is loyalty, and new generations, both characters struggle with power relate to how the family interacted.

Many different interpretations of “King Lear” have been made, each valuing and highlighting different aspects and themes of the play. It is necessary for these interpretations to be made and adapted in order for “King Lear” to have relevance within the context of the society. Each interpretation of the text extracts and concentrates on certain ideas, issues, themes, values of the play, altering the way the play is received amongst audiences and critics.
Deceit and lies are rampant in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet. It can be seen in the characters’ actions and words, as well as what they fail to say and do. It comes in various types of relationships -- between husband and wife, parent and child, siblings, and between lovers. Nearly every character in the play either deliberately spins a web of their own lies, uses another person for their trickery, or is used in another person’s deceitful plot. Each has different motives for their deceit -- to maintain power, to achieve their goals, to attain vengeance, or simply because it is necessary to function in this twisted society -- but all of them face a tragic ending no matter their initial intentions. In this play, deceit is so uncontrolled, intertwined, and multidimensional that it becomes impossible for either the characters or audience to ascertain what is true.
“King Lear” is known as one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. “King Lear” is a play which tears off the outer coverings of human character. Two prominent themes that can be found in “King Lear” are disguise and deception. Disguise and deception are connected to each other because if you put on a disguise, you are masking yourself. If you are masking yourself, you are misrepresenting the truth, which is also known as deception. The characters constantly deceive each other throughout the play by either changing their physical appearance or changing their personality to mask their true identities and motives. Shakespeare’s exposure of the connection between disguise and deception reflects today’s culture and is still relevant today.
The opportunity to view both productions of King Lear has appeared twice for me in the past two years. The first time I viewed Trevor Nunn’s 2009 production of King Lear my review would have been based solely on my ability to understand the dialogue and my appreciation of the acting of Ian McKellen. Two years later I have a better understanding of the actual play and while I still enjoy the 2009 production the 1982 production directed by Jonathan Miller presents the words of William Shakespeare in a more accurate and period specific manor.
