“All health care disciplines share a common and primary commitment to serving the patient and working toward the ideal of health for all.” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014, p. 1) There are many different professional members in the healthcare system. Each of them, have a specific specialty and responsibility to the patient and play an important role in the patient’s overall plan of care. “The scope of health care mandates that health professionals work collaboratively and with other related disciplines. When doing this, they become part of the interdisciplinary team, which consists of the nurses and all the other professionals providing care to the patient. It is an “approach in which two or more disciplines collaborate in the learning process with the goal of fostering interprofessional interactions that enhance the practice of each discipline.” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014, p. 1) Each healthcare member involved evaluates and develops a specific plan of care related to their field. When they communicate that plan, discuss thoughts and ideas, and continually reassess their plans with each other, a successful interdisciplinary team has been developed. Both teams are important to the patient and play huge roles in nursing.
With either team, “patients should expect an active role in, and often shared responsibility for, making care decisions that are best for them.” (Paget et al., 2011, p. 1) Likewise, both teams “should respect and support patients in this role, valuing their input, and prioritizing their preferences in shaping care.” (Paget et al., 2011, p. 1)
Communication Skills In order for both teams to collaborate and successfully provide care to the patient, they must possess effective communication skills. It's important for nurses to be actively involved with an interdisciplinary team because of the increasing complexity and scope of patient problems. As these complexities and problems increase, patient care necessitates the combination of efforts of physicians from different disciplines. Actually, comprehensive patient care in today's healthcare settings incorporates attempts to solve problems that are beyond the scope of expertise and training of a single professional. The delivery of safe, affordable and quality healthcare to clients is an integral part in today`s health care. In order to provide the aforementioned care; inter-professional (IP) collaboration of the health care members is essential. “Interprofessional working involves complex interactions between two or more members of different professional disciplines. It is a collaborative venture in which those involved share the common purpose of developing mutually negotiated goals achieved through agreed plans which are monitored and evaluated according to agreed procedures. This requires the pooling of knowledge and expertise to facilitate joint decision making based upon shared professional viewpoints” (Barrett, Sellman & Thomas, 2005, p18). This type of practice is the collective pooling of skills and knowledge from diverse professionals and specialists and is imperative for the improvement of health outcomes. Inter-professional practice occurs throughout all health care facilities, within numerous teams. Health care teams are functioning in the delivery of primary care. Each healthcare provider is a member with a special role. Some team members are doctors or technicians who help diagnosis disease. Others are experts who treat disease or care for patient’s physical and emotional needs. Collaboration between and among health professionals usually takes place around team efforts of a formal or informal nature, particularly in the care of illness that are acute or chronic. It involves interaction between and among different types of professionals and is enhanced when the members of a collaborative understand each other’s cultures, values, and methods.

As an individual from a therapeutic group, I know how absence of correspondence has adversely influenced quality administration and care. Overall, health care has many individualized specialties towards helping to aid our patients in their health. For this reason, it is important to be mindful of our own scope of practice as well as the scope of other team members working with each patient. For nurses, it is simply a part of working in health care that we are able to communicate different aspects of a patient’s care and that we are involved in working collaboratively since this is a standard within the nursing profession (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2010). Further, within the collaboration efforts that occur, there can be found different teams that are considered interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary. An interdisciplinary team can be considered a team that incorporates members from other scopes of practice into the treatment of a patient. These teams can include members such as case workers, pharmacists, doctors and nurses. An intradisciplinary team would be considered a team that is made up of members from one aspect of health care such as a team that was comprised of all nurses or all case workers.
