Healthcare Teams Paper
“All health care disciplines share a common and primary commitment to serving the patient and working toward the ideal of health for all.” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014, p. 1) There are many different professional members in the healthcare system. Each of them, have a specific specialty and responsibility to the patient and play an important role in the patient’s overall plan of care. “The scope of health care mandates that health professionals work collaboratively and with other related disciplines. Collaboration emanates from an understanding and appreciation of the roles and contributions that each discipline brings to the care delivery experience.” (American Association of Colleges of …show more content…

When doing this, they become part of the interdisciplinary team, which consists of the nurses and all the other professionals providing care to the patient. It is an “approach in which two or more disciplines collaborate in the learning process with the goal of fostering interprofessional interactions that enhance the practice of each discipline.” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014, p. 1) Each healthcare member involved evaluates and develops a specific plan of care related to their field. When they communicate that plan, discuss thoughts and ideas, and continually reassess their plans with each other, a successful interdisciplinary team has been developed. Both teams are important to the patient and play huge roles in nursing.
With either team, “patients should expect an active role in, and often shared responsibility for, making care decisions that are best for them.” (Paget et al., 2011, p. 1) Likewise, both teams “should respect and support patients in this role, valuing their input, and prioritizing their preferences in shaping care.” (Paget et al., 2011, p. 1)
Communication Skills In order for both teams to collaborate and successfully provide care to the patient, they must possess effective communication skills. For example, both teams should be active listeners. Listening actively reflects respect for what each person is thinking. With mutual respect, team members
