Imagine being in a place where you are completely defenseless against another person in a school surrounded by many students and teachers where one hardly knows the intentions of others. People can be unpredictable and when one least expects it there is danger right around the corner. Gun control is an issue everybody has an opinion on how it is important, potentially threatening, and present in modern society. While many feel that providing teachers with handguns can lead to a harmful environment. Others feel that having a teacher who has the right state of mind to carry a handgun is better than having a complete stranger or student because no one wants to go to school in fear of a possible attack. By giving teachers firearms this would provide educators and students more security and overall safety. Gun control has been around for years since the Second Amendment was ratified and the people’s opinions have been heightened since, but many don’t realize the casualties that have happened without the use of protection. There has been at least 200 shootings at school in the United States and 156 victims have been injured, as well as 94 people killed. 2.7 million violent crimes take place annually either at school or near schools that leads to school shootings happening due to mentally ill students or civilians (Miller). Everyone is so distracted on how the shooters get a hold of guns, especially when they are students. But, instead of thinking about how they should start thinking about what led them to act aggressively, which 56% of students were found to be involved in “school associated homicide or suicide.” By not thinking or trying to help someone who would like to be treated “normal” many just ignore and move on, this is what leads to many school tragedies, “the Columbine shootings rank as one of the worst mass shootings in US history as well as one of the deadliest episodes of school violence”(CNN). Without knowing the two shooters had already been inside the school placing bombs around the cafeteria, gladly they did not go off. With no clue of what had happen everyone continued act normal, giving the shooters the advantage of going back to their car for the guns. Thirteen innocent people had their
If a student was injured by a gun that was in possession of their teacher, even if it was a complete accident, the entire school board would be liable and face lawsuits. Carrying guns would also cause a school’s insurance rate to rise. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies may begin to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers due to the high risk that they are putting themselves at. The schools would also have to pay for the guns themselves as well as proper training for the teachers carrying them. Public schools often face budget cuts already and these unnecessary cost would only take away more from new books, technology, and arts
Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe entered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty-eight people and injuring fifty-eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives. School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.
Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass devastation on the students and faculty inside of a school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst-case situation. When twenty-six students had their life taken away during a school massacre, the thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where thirty-two students and teachers lost their lives (History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced protection and overall security.
An evolving and highly debated problem that continues to grow in our society, is the gun control epidemic. Gun violence in America is a national epidemic. Many people carelessly take advantage of Gun use and manipulate the tool without much thought to any repercussions. Many lives have been loss due to people legally or illegally obtaining guns and taking matters upon themselves to be executioners in holding other people's lives in their hands. Specifically, ongoing gun violence in schools have become a horrific catastrophe. It is putting student lives at risk, in a place that is supposed to facilitate a certain level of safety for the students. According to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, there was 558 gun incidents in schools
Allowing teachers to carry guns will allow teachers to prevent school shootings on the grounds of preschool through college campuses. Everyone has their own opinion about teachers being able to carry guns including other teachers, parents, and government officials. Depending on what state the teacher is teaching in determines if they can carry their gun now, if they are in the process of being able to, or if their state is not passing a law to allow them to carry their gun while at school. Teachers would not stand out like police officers or security officers would while in the school which would allow for other teachers and all of the students to have normal days if schools did not have officers before. Research shows that allowing some teachers to carry guns in their school promotes school safety, protects the teachers and students, and promotes gun safety while still teaching their students.
Some people believe that guns have no place in schools and teachers focus should only be the education of the students in their room. If that is how the teacher feels they should not carry a gun it is a big responsibility and should only be given to the teachers and staff that want to take on that obligation. Others may worry about children being hurt in the cross fire, bullet proof mats are in the
On a normal day at a normal school there it was, several loud bangs. A student with a pistol came around the corner and into a classroom. The teacher tried to go for the gun in his desk, consequently, it was in a locked drawer. By the time he reached, it it was too late, the teacher and five students were killed before the assailant was taken down. Teachers should not have guns during school hours for the following reasons, it won’t get rid of school shootings, it's uncertain if teachers can be trained on how to use them, and it won't improve school safety.
Imagine yourself going to school, and suddenly not feeling safe anymore. Imagine having to hide behind locked doors, with only your books to protect you. This is something that, according to a Washington Post analysis, 187,000 students in the U.S. have had to experience since 1999. Mass shootings and gun violence have become a recurring event in today's society. In 2010, there were approximately eighty-five gun deaths every day, according to the Center for Disease Control. The U.S. citizens own more guns and have a higher gun homicide rate than any other country in the world. Enough is enough, reasonable gun control laws should be enforced and put into place before this situation gets even more out of hand.
On February 14th, at 2:19 pm, a boy arrived at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida using an Uber ride. Everything deemed it to be a normal day at the school, until that boy triggered one of the biggest school shootings in US history, killing 17 and injuring another 17 people. That boy's name was Nikolas Cruz, age 19. Two years prior to this event, the boy was expelled from that same high school for threatening to assault teachers as well as threatening to shoot down the school. These school shootings have been happening all over the US, including the tragedy in Sandy Hook Elementary, on December 14th, 2012, when a shooter appeared at the school with one handgun and one assault rifle. That murderer killed 28 people ranging from ages 6 to 35. The masked killer´s name was Adam Lanza, age 20. Between 2007 and 2017, there have been 420 mass shootings in the US. There was even an emergency dismissal at our neighboring town, Staples High in Westport, due to a student who was thinking of executing a mass shooting. According to a poll in the Huffington Post, more than half of the US is inquiring, why are gun control laws so poorly structured in the US, and specifically, why are people able to buy assault
On April 20th, 1999, two students brought guns to Columbine High School in Colorado. They injured 20 people and killed 13, one being a teacher (Columbine High School Shootings). After this tragedy occurred, many people began to believe schools are unsafe, which lead to the idea that firearms should be allowed in school for teachers and students to use in case of an emergency. However, many oppose and believe allowing guns would lead to more chaos and tragedy that is unnecessary and can easily be prevented. Concealed carry of guns by students and teachers should not be allowed because students and teachers cannot be trusted, there are other ways to ensure safety, and students and teachers could feel unsafe in schools.
The big question in a lot of schools today do to several shootings and terrible incidents is whether or not a teacher should be able to be armed with a gun in case a situation of self-defense. It is a concern from regular citizens to teachers and all the way up to the government itself. Realistically, there would be a lot of problems trying to implement guns in the first place but seems reasonable in some ways as well. Teachers having or not having firearms will probably be decided soon enough, but is looking like they won’t have any in the near future. There are several reasons why a teacher should be armed in a school building.
December the 14th 2012 twenty first graders and six adult lives were taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The government is stepping in and passing stronger laws to keep the public safe. If gun control is regulated we would have less crime and less violence. Since the year of 2013 there has been a at least 175 school shooting in american that puts it at least one shooting per week. When it comes to american’s being exposed to gun fire these shooting are just a tip of the ice berg. A single school district in Washington D.C. had at least 336 gun shots in the vicinity of school over a single school year. This has depressed student enrollment by 5 percent. In the two years since the mass shooting in Newton , Connecticut
20 children and 6 adults dead after school shooting. 2 Dead, 13 Hurt in California School Shooting.(ABC News Writer,2001) Teachers should have the option to conceal and carry because it would make our schools a safer place for the kids and school staff. This is because a shooter will more than likely stand down against two or more people with a gun, or the shooter will make an attempt to run or shoot and will be shot and apprehended. There has been big pushes to make this possible there is support from state governments, legislation, and even other countries governments. There has been support from communities, teachers, and schools that have allowed teachers to carry. Teachers should have the option to conceal and carry because it would
going to a public, private, or chartered school should not make a difference or judge a child’s smartness because every child works on their pace and not everyone that is successful has attended chartered or public schools. He is for the access of guns but hopes that people that have guns have limited access especially keeping the people with mental illness and criminals in mind. He wants guns to be legal for everyone as a sense of safety. Carson wants to get rid of Medicare and Medicaid and instead let every American citizen have two thousand dollars in their account just for health services. This solution is not that great because some people may need more or less than two thousand dollars and it isn’t realistically possible because as it
Some of the opposing arguments are that “No one should carry a gun in a school except for security or police” they say they have the right certifications and training to do the job. That is great and all but when is there a police officer or security personnel in every classroom? The answer is never, that is why if teachers were going to be armed with a handgun they would go through the same training on how to safely use and shoot the firearm. Therefore they would be qualified to use the handgun as any police officer would be. Yes giving just your everyday school teacher a handgun and expecting them to know how to use it is stupid, that is where the importance of
