As a threat-based and intelligence-driven national security organization, the mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership to federal, state, and international agencies (“A Brief History of the FBI”). Special Agent applicants who pass the Physical Fitness Test are considered fit to safely and successfully complete the physical training and defensive tactics portion of Training at the FBI Academy (Grabianowski 2). The physical test consists of maximum number of sit ups in one minute, timed 300 meter sprint, maximum number of push-ups and timed one and a half mile run. Depending on the age and sex of the applicant, the amount will vary (Grabianowski 3). The next phase is the FBI background investigation. The background investigation includes: a polygraph test, credit and arrest checks; interviews with associates, personal and business references, past employers and neighbors; and verification of educational achievements (Grabianowski 4). The final phase is the medical examination. The medical examination is to determine whether any medical issue could affect the applicant's ability to perform the basic functions of the Special Agent position. This medical review ensures that each candidate's situation is reviewed on an individual basis. The medical examination also requires that applicants meet the Special Agent Vision Requirements and Hearing Requirements (Grabianowski 4).
