You ever hear someone say they have swagger? A lot of times people’s swagger is determined from their style. For example, everyone has a specific style of fashion. If you put on some cargo shorts with a tank top and slides you’re probably not going to a job interview. Just like anything else, writing has different expressions. Writing is a form of communication; the person is writing to inform, persuade, describe, or tell a story. There are four main types of writing styles, expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative. We then choose what we want to read according to our interest in each category.
Let’s look at expository writing. Expository writing is usually developed around one topic and is used to describe or inform you

Its name might as well give it away. Think of a closing argument in a court case being presented to a jury. Each party’s counsel is presenting a persuasive writing in the form of a speech. In this type of writing the writer uses choice words in a cohesive manner in order to “sway” or persuade the reader. You will most commonly come across this type of writing in advertisement. With that being said, persuasive writing is all around us. This type of communication may consist of the writer’s opinions, but the best form also includes facts to back up his or her statements. With attempts to get consumers to purchase specific products, we see persuasive writings all around us in today’s world.
“The battlefield had a cold malevolent air to it, the wind howling past you in every which way, as if trying to express its own confusion at the sudden seize-fire. I, myself, was confused. One minute the bullets were raining holy hell down on us in a never-ending bombardment, and the next, nothing.” An anonymous soldier gives detailed picture of a battlefield scene. Descriptive writing, often used to portray a vivid, detailed experience, person, place, or thing, is third of the writing styles. This style of writing requires strong observation skills to convey the writer’s point of view. In personal stories, you tend to see a lot of descriptive writing because it’s the writer’s story. He or she was there and can give several small
Writing is examined in the first chapter of “Writing about Writing”, a textbook by Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs. Not only does it examine articulate writing, but specifically the threshold Concepts of writing: “ideas that change the way you think, write, and understand a subject,” (Wardle, Downs 2011). Terms are used to educate readers, these terms are essential for the writer to better understand how to write, and for the reader to better understand composition. Three terms seem to do this; construct, contingency, and rhetoric.
The weather is perfect for racing: not too hot, not too humid, not too windy. I dash down the twisted trails in the woods, trying not to stumble on the gnarled roots protruding from the dirt. My spikes puncture the soft earth with every stride, and my legs repeatedly pound on the ground, soreness surging through them. As sweat trickles down my face and dirt smears across my aching calves, I ascend a steep hill, trying to bring forth the strength I have accumulated throughout endless hours of practice. Now that I am nearing the final two hundred meters, I must force my body to begin sprinting. Breathing heavily, I dart for the imminent finish line, trying to beat the uninterrupted tick of the timer. Even though the crowd surrounds all around me, I can barely hear their animated cheers, because all I can focus on is crossing the line before the girl next to me. I can feel adrenaline surging through my body, and I widen my stride to cap off the remaining distance. When I glance at my Garmin watch, a new personal best time flashes across the screen. I realize that all of the gruelling work I have put in is worth the final result: happiness. (Snapshot Lead)
This chapter of the textbook by E. Shelley Reid’s Ten Ways To Think About Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing addresses writing students. Reid uses expository and descriptive types of writing in her text. She describes and explains about the ten different important things when it comes to writing. One example in her chapter is where she explains how to write by the rules, describes the steps on how to be a successful writer and why some people struggle with writing essays or paragraphs sometimes. The writer quoted, “Write about what you know about so that you can show not just tell in order to adapt to your audience’s needs and accomplish your goals. Unless you do a good job showing what you mean, your audience will not understand your message.” (4) She also stated in one of her steps that sometimes the audience or readers of an essay or writing cannot exactly understand what the writer is trying to tell them. She tells her audience to
Everyone can feel, just like you and I, but there's one important question that lingers through the air. Should we really be accepting of other people?
It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.
What appeals or persuasive techniques are used? Many persuasive writers use a combination of pathos, logos, and ethos to sway their audience. (QUOTE SANDWICH)
Gordon Grice is fascinated, maybe obsessed with the black widow. He begins provocatively “ I hunt black widows. I capture it. I have found them in discarded wheels and tires and under railroads tires. I have found them in house foundations and cellars…I have found them I hospitals and in the den of the rattlesnake…. (176) In this quote Grice start with first person in place and with the repetition of “I” so that the reader can get the attention into it. Grice’s purpose in the “ Black widow” essay is to inform the audience about the widow’s life style. He shows inspiration, fascination, respect and love for widows. He furthers his purpose by using rhetorical strategies throughout his text.
“You’re raising suicidals with your predetermined titles.” This is the all-telling line from Benny’s song “Little Game.” The entire song is dedicated to the message that gender roles are something we are shoved into with little regard to who we actually are. Many people feel trapped in their gender roles, whether they are transgender or not. Most of us are trained to stay inside this little box and listen to orders like a monkey in a cage. Play with the dolls. Wear a dress. You, cut your hair. Pink is for girls, you can’t wear that! But why? Why is the expectation to stay inside our little boxes, while outside the glass such amazing things are waiting for us? You can’t put someone in a box and expect them to be happy. Some people would rather kill themselves than live like that. And whose fault would that be? I think we know the answer. You can’t expect someone to sit in a box and obey blindly just because you told them so. I will not sit idly and let wonderful things pass me by. I will always, always choose my heart over anything anyone else tells me.
Persuasive text has similarities and differences with other types of nonfiction texts. A persuasive text has a purpose—to convince readers of something—just like other nonfiction texts might be written to inform or entertain. Persuasive texts are structured so that the reader can follow along easily, but there is an emphasis on providing details and evidence to convince the reader to believe something or do something.
Some elements of writing (development, organization, style) fit task, purpose and/or audience; others are mismatched.
Writers utilize descriptive writing to create a clear depiction of people, objects or events by emphasizing important
The two styles of writing that are combined are short stories and journalism. From short stories, feature stories use extensive description, sensory details, quotations and anecdotes, personification, characterization, setting, and plot structure. From journalism, feature stories are factual, fair and balanced, and objective.
As any artist does in their work of art, in order to become a great writer you must be completely devoted to what you are creating. Sentences must flow as if brush strokes, words must compile to create cohesive, clear, and complex thoughts as if colors. Writing is just as much of an art as painting, sculpting, or drama. Just like in writing, every artist has a particular style- the way the artist uses his brush, colors, canvas, tools- In writing a style can be shown by the writers distinct use of different sentence structures, certain types of vocabulary, or other things that distinguish one writer from another. For me, a great part of my style in writing was developed from a sense of humor and inspiration to acquire knowledge from vocabulary.
There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of schooling. Each person picks up the same type of writing styles but as years go by people seem to pick up there own little types of writing style that separates them from everyone else. As I have gone through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are sure to come as I continue my education. My writing skills have only gotten better from the time of ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught the basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have many strengths and also
There are many different forms and styles used in writing. Writing is a form of communication that is used to document and express ideas people have. Through the years as people grow and learn knew ways of writing, writing awareness of a person will evolve into a much higher level of thinking. From the first term paper a person writes in high school to the papers they hand in at the college level, the writing will have matured over the years. The authors of writing develop new and more sophisticated ways in expressing themselves through the words they use in writing. Throughout history writers have found ways in which they can achieve the goals of gaining the readers attention and keep them interested. A good form of
