Amy Shows July 16, 2015 ENC1101_05 Explanatory Synthesis Mechanical Future Technologies’ continuous advancement triggers suspicion and debates. The digital hold on humanity riddles society with misunderstandings and fear. The rapid progress of machines appear all over the media for the world to see. Before any valid opinions arise, one must consider a multitude of scientific and social factors. Despite the fear, Artificial Intelligence cannot replace the human brain and can coexist with humanity. IBM’s current acheivment illustrates recent advancements in the field of AI. Watson, a “question answering machine,” over humanity on the television game show “Jeopardy!” In the future, IBM hopes to create a mechanical physician’s assistant that …show more content…

(Markoff 213) Computers might hold a multitude of information but they could never compare to the human mind. John Searle states that computers cannot truly think, for they only “manipulate symbols.” (Searle 215) They only know what an individual has programmed them to do. The words and phrases given to the computer have no true meaning to them. To Watson it all appears as mere data. Boxes must be organized in a visually understanding manner to perform a task quickly and correctly. Some warehouses do not follow this form of organization as they are not for humans, but for robots. Steven Levy describes a warehouse where bots “course nimbly through aisles” to precisely locate and identify items meant for delivery. These robots are known as Kiva bots. These machines, like Watson, are a marvel in the field of Artificial Intelligence. They may not possess human consciousness, but by using data bases and “clever algorithms” these machines are able to perform their tasks in a swift and accurate manner. Clearly, today’s AI appears nothing like its original intent. When the initial concept arose, humanity believed that technology could “replicate” the human mind. Those working with AI soon discovered this prediction to be impossible. Instead, these machines operate under their own form of thinking. With this new ideology, a cornucopia of digital wonders began to sprout around the world. Today, humanity relies on AI. Such technology is “embedded” into the lives of everyday
