Having the opportunity to live in America, we are not commonly exposed to the overwhelming effects of anarchy; however our United States government is known for their involvement in aiding countries experiencing disorder. For more than two decades, the country Somalia dwelled in the ruins of its own nation after the collapse of its civilization. It was considered the world’s most failed state. Recently, as reported in the article, “US recognizes Somalia government after two decades of anarchy” by Mike Pflanz, the United States government began assisting Somalia to rise from the ashes of turmoil and back on their feet. The Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stresses that “Somalia is emerging from a very long, difficult period and now moving away from the chaos, instability, extremism, piracy, to an era of peaceful and development.” The article also notes the conflicts against Islamic extremists and pirates, who took advantage of the unrest in the country. This relates with the theme

It will investigate the colonial influences and conflicts between Somalia and its imperial occupiers and how these influences set the stage for future conflicts between the clans. Also, it will attempt to define the reasons why Somalia has become a failed state. The importance of United States foreign policies will be discussed as they have

Conflicts within the nation of Somalia were sometimes planned as a means to an end. Whereby the United States Government supported a certain regime before they used their power to gain control of the situation and overthrow the tyrant. In other cases the use of national power was used such as the Islamic Courts Union to gain control over Somalia by implementing logical line of operations by providing the people their needs and services to gain their trust. In these situations it would be considered as an irregular warfare environment, because they were violent struggles
I am originally from Somalia a country located in the East Africa also called “Horn of Africa”, bordered by Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. I was born and raised in Kenya. However, both my parents were born and rise in Somalia, they went their school in Mogadishu, Somalia, and built their family there. Five of my siblings, we were born in Mogadishu Somalia, but unfortunately, they did not had the opportunity to experience them early childhood in Somalia. In a brief history the Republic of Somalia has had its ups and downs with unrest, starting with a war, which broke out in the early 90’s. With these conflicts came unbearable life situations and many people searched for opportunities all over the world, mainly the western continents.
Somalia is one of the world's poorest and least developed countries (Campbell). Because of the Civil War, which broke out in 1991, much of Somalia's economy has been devastated. The war left many
Affirmation of Somaliland is crucial because the encouragement of African action should not become the basis for inaction on the part of the United States. Jendayi Frazer, in her report on “Somaliland: Time for African Union Leadership,” states that the United States would recognize Somaliland if the others acted first. But Somaliland deserves recognition from a purely U.S.-centric national security perspective. The United States has always stood to protect the values that it was founded upon. Somaliland, in its entirety fits this impression. The Somaliland government and population embody a moderate voice in the Muslim world that rejects radical interpretations of Islam, including that espoused by the Council of Somali Islamic Courts currently in control. It would serve as a bulwark against the further expansion of radical ideologies in the Horn of Africa by offering a brilliant case of how
Diplomatic support to the country of Somalia includes many key aspects; (1) The U.S verbally expressing their support of the legitimate central government of Somalia, (2) diplomatic recognition, which includes the U.S possibly opening an embassy in Somalia or at the very least having some diplomatic representation in Somalia, and (3) The United States working in conjunction with the UN, African Union, and other International Peacekeeping Agencies. With the U.S expressing verbal support to the legitimate central government of Somalia, there will be hope for the government to regain its power. The creation of a Somali embassy will also prove to the central government, that the U.S fully supports its aspirations to restore its control over Somalia, and bring order to the country. With the United States working alongside many international peacekeeping agencies, Somalia will receive the economic help it so desperately needs.
In August of 1992, President George Bush Sr. sent US soldiers into Somalia to provide humanitarian relief to those Somalis suffering from starvation. The major problems in Somalia started when President Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown by a coalition of opposing clans. Although there were several opposing groups, the prominent one was led by Mohammed Farah Aidid. Following the overthrow of Barre, a massive power struggle ensued. These small scale civil wars led to the destruction of the agriculture in Somalia, which in turn led to the deprivation of food in large parts of the country. When the international community heard of this, large quantities of food were sent to ease Somali suffering. However, clan leaders like Aidid routinely
But we also know that military humanitarian interventions in the name bringing peace to a country in conflict can go horribly wrong. In 1994 President Clinton withdrew all US forces from the UN peacekeeping force in Somalia after eighteen US soldiers were killed and images of their dead bodies being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu were broadcast on television, horrifying and infuriating the American public. For those too young to remember this tragic episode, it is well documented in the Hollywood movie “Black Hawk Down.” All UN forces in Somalia were subsequently withdrawn in 1995 leaving that country to spiral into two decades of chaos and lawlessness. Today, Somalia remains effectively a failed state.
