Throughout the movie, psychology terms and concepts are sprinkled creatively throughout in a fun an educational way. Emotion is the main concept of the movie, it sends us quick, powerful, physical messages that allow us to respond to our environment. Joy is the leader and she is so ensured that Riley is happy, but Joy fails to see the importance of Sadness. In the end all Riley needed was to be
through Riley's mind outside the control center and her own comfort zone. As Joy struggles to restore Riley's Joy, Riley is
Each emotion has a different job on Riley’s mind. The job for fear was to keep her safe. Fear also focuses on things that are going wrong such as problems. While disgust avoided Riley from getting physically and socially poison. Furthermore, the emotion of anger is in charge of making things fair. Finally joy is the emotion of being happy. Joy tries to cheer up Riley and keeps the other emotions under control in order to make Riley’s life go smooth. During the movie they also showed many memories Riley’s had while
Riley begins to go through Erikson’s stage of Identity vs. Role Confusion, as she does not have any friends at school and she is out of touch with her emotions later on in the movie.
Depiction of the emotions in her mind is shown in a very interesting way, by means of cartoonish characters; Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger. There is a control room, which gets affected by either of these emotions and affect Railey in certain ways. Joy is always joyous, trying to make all the other emotions
Released on June 2015, Inside Out has become one of Pixar’s critically acclaimed films for its creativity in its portrayal of psychology. The film takes a spin on the mind’s functions, by personifying emotions and creating a system that controls Riley’s, an eleven year old girl, brain and behavior. The story revolves around Riley’s life and her five emotions, Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear, and Disgust that control the “Headquarters” of her brain. The main character is Joy, who takes control in leading Riley’s life to make sure it is filled with happiness and laughter. As Riley grows up, her experiences become orbs of memories that are transported to long-term memory. Core memories are held in headquarters, which are connected to Riley’s islands
Lastly, this movie represents how short term memories collected during the day are converted into long term memories during the night. This process happens inside Riley’s complicated maze. Once those memories are recovered and retained, the memories that are related to them might differ or become modified in a way or the other. We can relate to that as when Sadness touches a gold colored happy memory and it turns into a blue tinted memory. Therefore, we might think that our memories are exact and precise, but we need to know that they are in fact transformable. Memories are not certainly accurate and we can never trust our memories.
In my opinion, another emotional concept shown in the film can be hope and love. Riley was always hoping for everything to get in place. The first day, when she first enters the house she was disappointed. The house was nothing than what she expected. Instead of getting her emotions down, she saw it from a positive point of view. She can now design her room however she likes. She had hopes that everything was going to get in place and she would have at least a similar life. Love was another emotion shown in the film. Riley was always showing the love she has for her parents and the people she left behind. Her family plays an important role in her emotions since they were always looking for was to support her. They wanted what is best for her.
This relates to sadness because sadness did not know her influence in Riley’s life, however, as the film moved on, she became a key emotion that not only changed Riley’s future. In the last section of the film, sadness and joy come across Bing Bong, who was once Riley’s imaginary friend. Bing Bong is upset about not being in Riley’s life anymore, so in return, sadness comforts him by understanding his grief. This foreshadows to sadnesses later influence on Riley’s life because sadness is the only emotion that truly understood the way Riley felt, therefore, that is the reason why she was the only emotion capable of healing Riley. Furthermore, sadness is the hero emotion because when she recognized that embracing her sad emotions is what mainly encouraged Riley to not leave San Francisco, this gave her a sense of her own purpose, something she hasn’t felt
When Riley was born, Joy (Amy Poehler) was alone in “headquarters” .But soon, other emotions appeared, including Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Anger (Lewis Black). As Riley got older, Joy, and the other emotions learned to work together to bring balance to both her memories and the "islands"of Rileys personality.
The eight main characters of the movie all had to contend with different types of conflicts, some such as Waverly's Mother had to endure a type of social conflict from the 1st wife and other concubines, the unjust discrimination of the husband's family, while other characters such as Mei-mei had to endure a life of living under the shadow of Waverly. But each of the characters despite having different types of conflicts be it elemental, physical or psychological, all had to endure one glaringly similar psychological conflict - Each woman had to contend with their own weaker selves, before being able to confront their respective problems, be it an abusive husband or an overbearing mother, each protagonist had to
She started to recognize how stressed her mom was about the moving truck and the house. She started to recognize how her dad was stressed about his work. One night they were all talking and then later started to play hockey, her dad got a call and just dropped everything they were doing and answered the call. That began to happen over and over again. He would drop everything and anything just to answer the phone and would even leave without saying goodbye. Riley made herself believe he was doing that because he didn’t love his family anymore. She started to push him away and make him feel how she was feeling. As a result to how she was acting towards him she got in more trouble, which would make her even more
Among all of the emotions, the one which exhibits the most leadership qualities is Joy. Going by the Big Five Personality Traits, Joy excels at the expectations of nearly of the traits. The first, being surgency, is completely natural to her character. Being the physical representation of joy itself, she is constantly energetic, extroverted and makes conversation whenever possible, even with Sadness, whom she does not like initially. When she is trying to raise Sadness’s sprits to continue on and make their way back to headquarters, she makes Sadness think happy thoughts, which to Sadness include “[a] good movie where [a] dog died.” The second trait is conscientiousness, which Joy shows not through her teamwork with the other emotions, but through the dependability she has for Riley. Having been with her from the moment of her birth, Joy is committed to always see Riley happy, thus she never leaves her post at the control board until she and Sadness are taken away; and even then, Joy spends every moment looking for a way back to Riley. The third trait is agreeableness, which matches her personality perfectly. Everything Joy does or talks about is heavily optimistic. Despite everything that goes wrong about the move, including the dreams versus the reality of what the new house would look like, the moving van not arriving on time, and not being able to find a good place to eat, Joy remains
“If all jokes are conditional, at least to some degree, then what difference does it make that they call for a contribution from the audience? And why can’t the joke-teller simply inform his audience in advance, tell them whatever they need to know in order to get his joke? Or, why can’t the audience accept the joke conditionally?” Hot Rod, the 2007 American comedy starring Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, and Directed by Akiva Schaffer, regards amateur stuntman Rod Kimble and the inability of Kimble to obtain the respect of his step-father through various physical fights. When step-father Frank falls ill and is in need of a heart transplant, Rod aims to raise the money needed to give Frank the needed heart transplant, and to finally win
