It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but our society today lacks to understand that. In today’s time different is not accepted, people that are different are discriminated, looked down upon and usually picked on. People with disabilities are seen as different creatures by most people, the disabled don’t choose to be the way they are, but still our society alienates them. There are different types of disabilities, some type of disabilities are; mental disability, physical disability, learning disability and socializing disability. These disabilities are seen as weakness in our society that hence contribute to the stereotype that leads to the discrimination against the disabled.

It is human nature to despise those that are different than normal. Everyone has a different perception of normal and when someone cuts that boundary it results in discrimination. Some people also tend to dislike the disabled due to their own weaknesses, to hide their own failures they will look down upon the handicap to make themselves feel better. Some people's self-esteem is so tiny that they have to find someone "lower than them" to feel superior. Also society perceives the disabled as useless, powerless and inefficient human beings, which also contributes to the ideology that leads to the discrimination against the disabled. Psychological and cultural influences also result in discrimination against the disabled. Hence, we can conclude that the fact that the disabled are “different” is what leads to the discrimination against them.
• Direct discrimination occurs when a person with a disability is treated less favourably than a person who does not have a disability.
• This occurs if a person is discriminated against in the following areas; employment, education and training, provision of facilities, access to public premises, etc…
• Indirect discrimination will occur where a person imposes a requirement, condition or practice that has the effect of disadvantaging people with a protected attribute, and that is not reasonable.
• An advertisement for a job as a cleaner requires an applicant to speak and read English
• Indirect discrimination: when you have a rule or policy that applies to everyone but disadvantages a person with a protected characteristic.
The world can be cruel and unkind to those who aren't deserving. Children and adults affected with a physical or mental handicaps may not understand that people are being malicious towards them. Just because
How do you think society treats people with disabilities? I was treated differently in sixth grade when I was bullied for being “fat.” I wasn’t bullied physically but it was emotional and mental bullying. This jerk always called me fat even though his best friend was way bigger than me. This scarred me permanently. Society doesn't accept things that are slightly different than what they believe is normal.
“Direct discrimination occurs if a person or a group is treated unfavorably because of their immigrant background. The second refers to a situation where formally equal treatment has, or is likely to have, the effect of disadvantaging immigrants, and that cannot be justified on
Disabilities were viewed in many different ways by different societies and even differently by different families within a society. After WWII the view of different types of people changed. Views on people with disabilities changed because of the number of veterans who returned with physical and mental disabilities and because the number of people with disabilities who were employed for the first time in the war effort. Another reason that people with disabilities were viewed differently was because President Roosevelt was unable to walk because of polio. President Kennedy had a sister that had an intellectual disability. So people began to view people with disabilities differently. My family also viewed disabilities differently than most families. My brother, Sammy, who was born in 1955 had Down’s syndrome. My grandmother had a sister named “Bam” that had an intellectual disability. This caused our family to view intellectual
Prejudice and Stereotyping is one of the main causes in disability discrimination. Some people tend to believe disabled people have limitations and less potential beyond the disability itself.
Five myths/stereotypes that people with disabilities face are the following : People who are blind acquire a "sixth sense”, people with disabilities always need help, the lives of people with disabilities are totally different than the lives of people without disabilities, non-disabled people are obligated to "take care of" people with disabilities, and people with disabilities are more comfortable with "their own kind. These five stereotypes I have mentioned, I am guilty of. For some reason, I thought individuals who were blind had a six sense to compensate for not seeing. It makes sense now that all the rest of their senses is fully formed than the regular person. Secondly, I always thought that I should offer help to every disabled individual
Indirect discrimination can arise when it is a condition, rule, policy, or even a practice in your company that applies to everyone but particularly disadvantages people who share a protected characteristic.
I feel that people with disabilities have been treated without respect in the past. It isn’t their fault that they are disabled. Many insurance companies would not even pay medical bills for someone that is disabled in the past, it was a fighting battle. And many people that would see someone that is missing a leg or their face is deformed, people would stare and laugh at them, which would is worse for them to deal with their disabilities. Many mean people would call people names with disabilities like “Freak”,
Seventy-five percent of the time, people suffering from any kind of handicap are excluded by regular folks. The society has to begin integrating them into the system in order to create a movement of acceptance towards them. It is unacceptable that the population just does not deal with individuals that require special needs, they rather just avoid them all together. As a result, the disabled are always left behind, never wanted, and often ridiculed. The ones that are not mentally challenged grow up to have an extremely low self esteem because of the lack of understanding in relation to them. On the other hand, those who do have mental disorders simply don’t understand what is really going on around them. They could think they have friends but in the end they were just laughing and making fun of them, without their knowledge.
Direct discrimination is the place you are dealt with less positively in view of your inability than somebody without a disability would be dealt with in similar conditions.
There are all different types of people with different types of disabilities. No one particular type of person is exempt from any type of disability. These people are leading a normal life to the highest degree possible in their sight. Their daily routine may differ from “normal” people or people without disabilities, but they are leading what seems to be an exciting life regardless of what others may think or endure. A disability is not always physical or can be seen by the naked eye, but rather it can also be a mental issue or invisible to the eye. People have a tendency to be more sympathetic to a visual disability rather than an invisible disability. As an educator, I also find myself being more empathetic towards students who have a visible disability in a self-contained classroom than to students who tend not to have a less severe or invisible disability in a regular classroom. In this video it also shows us hoew the language has changed om saying “handicapped” to saying a person has a “disability”.
When others see a disabled adult most people are assuming the worst and think they cannot do anything for themselves. Misconceptions is really big on this topic, because a lot of adults that are disabled are judged by the way they are. You can look at someone who is disabled and think the worst when in reality it is not that bad. People for years now think that if you are disabled in anyway that you are not capable to do things on your own or do anything a nondisabled person can do which in some cases some cannot but most can. People who are disabled are a major stereotype just because of the way they are, one stereotype can be that they are weak. Like if you saw someone who could not walk most people think they need help to do everything, which is not true at all there are different ways for them to do the things on a regular basis. They are seen as
Direct discrimination: Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated less favourably than another person because of a protected characteristic they have or are thought to have or because they associate with someone who has a protected characteristic.
