Artificial Intelligence Reflection Paper

In addressing the question “How do you define artificial intelligence?” I have found that artificial intelligence is based on the ideas of finding solutions to problems through a variety of searching methods using information provided to the machine through input from users, the environment, or sensors etc. The goal is to find the best possible solution based on the requirements and parameters provided. For example there is a difference between finding the node as fast as possible and finding the best node (a depth first search may find a node faster but a breadth first search will find the shallowest node assuming a solution exists). You must also take into effect the limitations of the computer (the process may take much longer if the search method requires the storage of every node that has been read by the program thus the measures of space and time complexity). At the beginning of this semester I stated that artificial intelligence is “a field of technology that deals with machines and other forms of technology that have the capacity to learn, think, adapt and react to different situations.” Now that this course is drawing to a close I see that this was an accurate statement however there is so much more to it than that. The how and why are two questions that really confused me when it came to artificial intelligence. Based on my limited knowledge of the subject at the beginning of the semester I knew only what I had seen in movies, robots replacing humans and even becoming harmful to humans. I did not understand why someone would want to make artificial intelligence. I now see that the ploint of artificial intelligence is not to replace humans but to help us learn and advance. The computer has far surpassed humans mental ability to think and solve problems. We do not have the capacity to solve complex problems with the speed and precision provided by a computer. This is where due to human fallacy it becomes necessary for computers to learn and adapt in much the same way that our brains learn and adapt. However this is where the question of how comes into play. How much should they learn, how can they make decisions without a conscience? I see now that there are many limitations on how computers
