There are numerous ways in which art “moves” human beings. For centuries, the effect of art has been theorized and questioned. Through my colloquium, I hope to grapple with the ways in which art, made within and for a specific moment and culture, is able to live beyond its historical discourse and still express a profound, multivalent sense of meaning. Looking at philosophical, religious, sociological, and political texts from ancient time to the present, I will investigate the pressing question, what power does the image hold in society? I will explore the ways people have both thought about and used visual culture through history and across the world. Additionally, I seek to analyze how the societies that produced them can be recognized within the work. Using the texts on my booklist, I will explore the impact of the image through a range of intellectual and disciplinary traditions. I will start by examining the hopes and fears of art’s role in society, through the lens of the Bible and ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. Iconoclasm, or the destruction of religious icons and other images, has been prominent since the creation of the Bible. The ancient world abounded with warnings against specific Biblical images. What is it that they feared about art and representation? The ten commandments, written out in the Hebrew Bible, begins with God commanding, “I am the Lord your God”. Within this first commandment, we begin to see the prohibition against graven images
We are also shown how these different forms of art change over time and how different cultures have adopted them and used them as their own form of art to express emotion, love, creativity, and passion. This book teaches us how art is viewed in different ways by the church and was very informative for me to obtain a better and deeper understanding of art and how the churches valued it.
In today’s society, we are constantly being bombarded with visual art forms. Whether they be classical paintings from the Renaissance, a towering and modern skyscraper, or even a cheesy 90’s R&B music video, they all have one thing in common. According to Carolyn Dean’s definition, these would all fall under the category of “art by intention.” In her essay “The Trouble with (The Term) Art” she advocates a distinction between art by intention and what she deems “art by appropriation.” The difference is that one work was created with the intention of being consumed for visual pleasure, while the other was not. In the contemplation of art, or rather the conceptually intangible definition it currently possess, it is imperative to be mindful that “art” has been utilized as a promotional device, ceremonial item, aesthetically purposed article or perhaps none of these or all. Throughout history, societies have defined and transformed themselves through their art. When looking at works of art today, a person sees not only the work of art itself, but also the world from which it came from. The same is true for this transformation mask, which reflects the works of art and beliefs of the Northwest Coast Tribes.
At the council, 338 members met to rule on the use of images to depict religious figures and ideas. This assembly, including Emperor Constantine and Leo, rules that “the unlawful art of painting living creatures blasphemed the fundamental doctrine of our salvation—namely, the Incarnation of Christ, and contradicted the six holy synods” (Iconoclastic Council, 1). The Iconoclastic Council bans the use of images and pictures to depict religious ideologies and figures because they feared that worshippers honored the image over the actual person, place, or thing represented. To support their argument, the council recalls the Holy Book in which God states, “Thou shall not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath…They changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man,…and served the creature more than the Creator” (2). Unlike John, this council uses stronger textual evidence from the Holy Book in order to validate their argument against icons. Furthermore, they argued that “folly” painter constructed the icons to undermine the icons. Art by its nature is a subject of the philosophical, social, economic, political or religious context surrounding its creator. More often than not, a work of art addresses a specific topic or somewhat revolves around a particular person. Therefore, it is impossible to separate the context of a piece of painting, either historical or cultural, to its intrinsic value or the artwork's meaning. On the other hand, different cultures and time utilized specific conventions that govern the representation of objects of creativity. This essay highlights various pieces of art and their relationship to particular cultural, political, economic, or social settings. Moreover, it pinpoints how different times influence art presentation.
Iconoclasm is the ban of religious images, statues and icons for religious or political motives. In Christianity, Iconoclasm was the result of a literal interpretation of the Ten Commandments, which suggests that worshipping holy figures, pictures or graved images is prohibited. The Byzantines saw two eras of iconoclasm, the first Iconoclast period was from 726 to 787 CE, when Leo III, the emperor of Byzantium at that time, ordered the removal of religious images of the Christ, Mary, and every single form of art representing the divinity in Christianity (fig 1). Art has an unforeseen control over the human mind. While media, in particularly art, was once used as an expressive outlet or served a decorative purpose, the contemporary purpose of art has shifted away from its origins. In Tetsuro Araki’s adaptation of Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s “The Hell Screen” a hierarchical division is established, placing art at the top in which society looks upward for the basis of their knowledge. Through the hierarchical atmosphere that juxtaposes art and civilians, it suggests that humans are enslaved to media when it becomes clear that societies actions and thoughts originate from The Hell Screen itself.
Art has always been considered the effervescent universal tool of communication. Art does not require a concrete directive . One sculpture,drawing or written creative piece, can evoke a myriad of emotions and meaning . Artistic pieces can sometimes be considered the regurgitation of the artist's internal sanctum. Just as it’s human nature to believe in something larger or more powerful than oneself, it is also human nature to express that divinity through art, this is proven time and time again in human history. Picturing the divine is a type of testimony to show a cultures greatness. The painting Arhats Giving Alms to Beggars comes from the Chinese culture of the Southern Song period. Whereas, the mosaic Christ as Pantocrator comes from the Byzantine culture of the Greek Orthodox tradition. Although these paintings come from very different backgrounds both cultures show the divine and their pressure on mankind to follow the rules, such as giving away worldly desires. By doing so and letting go of material possessions, mankind can be hopeful of
The Toilet of Venus whereby for this work of art, several questions including the fundamental motivation for the visual art and the styles used in the paintings will arise. Art has always held an influential position in the social, economic, and political lives of humankind. Examining the relationship will open eyes for more studies on the specific implications of each style used in the life.
When we look at the history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, we always like to use the confinement of thinking and the liberation of ideas to sum up the two, especially in the art, the medieval paintings are often used in dark colors, deformed three-dimensional concept Showing the real world, and often less a bit human nature. As literary critics, Plato and Aristotle disagree profoundly about the value of art in human society. Plato attempts to strip artists of the power and prominence they enjoy in his society, while Aristotle tries to develop a method of inquiry to determine the merits of an individual work of art. It is interesting to note that these two disparate notions of art are based upon the same fundamental assumption: that art is a form of mimesis, imitation. Throughout the vast history of art, historians can find connections throughout the centuries. Artists from the beginning of humankind have been inspired by the world around them. From the Apollo 11 stones to present day, history and culture have provided inspiration and have been the focus of various pieces. Examining artwork from the 15th-18th century, viewers can be shown a whole world that would be unknown to us without these artist’s contributions. History, religion, and cultural events have sculpted the art world, and we can observe this through many pieces during the 15th-18th centuries.
For over two thousand years, various philosophers have questioned the influence of art in our society. They have used abstract reasoning, human emotions, and logic to go beyond this world in the search for answers about arts' existence. For philosophers, art was not viewed for its own beauty, but rather for the question of how art and artists can help make our society more stable for the next generation. Plato, a Greek philosopher who lived during 420-348 B.C. in Athens, and Aristotle, Plato’s student who argued against his beliefs, have no exceptions to the steps they had to take in order to understand the purpose of art and artists.
