The Diary of a Young Girl, written by Anne Frank herself, is a moving story of Anne’s feelings, thoughts, and observations throughout World War II. When I decided to read The Diary of a Young Girl, I expected it to be mainly about the war, concentration camps, and the way the whole outside world has dealt with the war. In actuality, the book was about the days and nights Anne Frank experienced living in the secret annex. This made the book better because it opened my eyes to the reality that Anne was a real person just like me. She had feelings, thoughts, friends, and family. She has friends, a boyfriend, pestering parents and is just all around a happy girl. Unfortunately her whole life changes in the span of a month. Being Jewish during the war, the Franks had a large target on their back, so they decide to go into hiding to stay away from the Nazis. With the help of other families the Franks manage to live in the annex for two years spending their time reading, writing, and longing to be free. Every few days Anne manages to write a short entry about the gunshots she hears at night, what she misses most, and about what she is doing in the annex she's stuck in. She would discuss places with such passion and detail that it felt like you were there with her looking at the same thing. When she talked about her new secret annex I felt like I was walking the halls with her. At one point in the annex she talked about how the doorways are low, so they would nail wool and cloth to the tops of the doorways so that they would stop getting bruises on their foreheads. This made me laugh. I pictured tall and lanky Otto Frank banging his head on the doorway. Also, Anne was just talking about her favorite fountain pen for a page and I could tell you way more than you would need to know about it.
