Analysis and Interpretation – the Nine Billion Names of God

The biblical metanarrative touches the storyline of the main book, the Bible, from the beginning from Genesis to the end of Revelation. Throughout the bible there are many stories that have a message and come across to Christians that relate to their life. The bible is one book with many events that tells one big story. There are five acts of the biblical metanarrative consists of which are, Act I: The God of Creation, Act II: Sin Enters the World, Act III: God Covenants with Israel, Act IV: Jesus and the New Covenant, and Act V: The Fellowship of believers. Each of these Acts have stories about the life of Jesus that has a meaning Christians relate to.

The common ground of religions in the world is that they claim the existence of god/gods who holds the power beyond human ability. Each religion explains its existence in their own unique ways and implement it to people’s lifestyle. The film, 330 Million Gods, seeks to understand the Hinduism way of explanation. This documentary mainly focuses on the Hindu concept of divine, religious practices, and the stages of life. Also, the documentary illustrates how Indian lifestyle blends into its religion in the big cities – city of Benares and rural areas – village of Bhith Bhagwanpur. The Tibetans and the Navajo Native Americans are from different cultures. The Tibetan’s have lived intertwined with China for centuries. They tried to free themselves from China rules yet they failed. The 14th Dalai Lama fled China and found exile in India. China to this day has total control over Tibetan people. “Using all the tools of repression to deter and punish Tibetan resistance” as stated on Free Tibet. The people of Tibet are dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The monks and nuns play a vital part in the community, furthermore they are viewed as teachers and mentors. The Chinese did not want the Dalai Lama to have the followers that he had. If a person how any paraphernalia of the Dalai Lama could lead to their incarceration and or torture. The Chinese monitors and controls the religious aspects in Tibet. Consequently, the Chinese government found the devotion of the Tibetans to the Dalai Lama as a danger to their political goals. By way of contrast with the conflict with the Chinese government, the monks live a simple life. The Tibetan monks believes in the liberation of all being, personal enlightenment, compassion and nature around us.

The Bible is composed of many different stories and narratives. Each one of these individual stories contributes to the greater story of the Bible; sometimes called the Grand Story of Scripture. Within each Story, they have elements that define the setting, characters, climax, and themes. The overall Grand Story of Scripture contains these elements in each of the five divisions: prologue, epilogue, and three acts in between.

Around the world and throughout all the different versions of Christianity, there are so many things that people call “the gospel”. Some say it is the only way to get to Heaven, or that it is a doctrine of damnation that God sent us to right our wrongs. Ravi Zacharias stated in a video sermon what he thinks that the gospel has become when he says, “It became I think cheapened and somehow diluted if not polluted and so an average person who view what is the gospel they say it is the same old thing, you’re a sinner and you’re heading to hell…” (Zacharias). Most individuals in today’s time do not know what God’s true love is or what the real meaning of the gospel is truly because of the situations they have been in during their lives and what society has made it out to be. According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of the word “gospel” is, “The message concerning Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation,” (Webstersdictionary.com). Though this is a technical definition, the Gospel of God is so much more than just teachings. The Gospel can help those who have never met God, since it is the good news that should be preached to everyone, it is how believers go and make more disciples throughout the world, and through it is a way for everyone to connect with God on a personal and spiritual level.

The book explains that a machine known as “Deep thought” was built to answer “the ultimate question of life the universe and everything”. Deep thought is a super computer that took 7.5 million years to answer the question. The computer, 7.5 million years later answered “the answer to life the universe and everything is 42”. The makers of Deep thought (who are actually a pair of interdimensional mice) dissatisfied with the answer make another super computer, Earth.

Biblical Interpretation is important and necessary so that we can understand what the text is saying, what the intended theological message is, and how to personally apply and teach these Scriptural truths to carry forward the Gospel in rescuing others from despair and death to hope and life, thus displaying His glory and growing His Kingdom. It is about finding what God is revealing about Himself and His Son Jesus Christ. Moreover, it is for us to know that God desires to have a relationship with us and for us to be set apart in a covenant relationship with Him to display holy lives that bring Him glory. Interpretation, using hermeneutical principles, help guide us in proper boundaries for interpreting Scripture so that we can reveal the intended meaning of the text. Without this, we run the risk of imposing our own ideas on the text, therefore misinterpreting. Misinterpreting can cause us to miss theological truths, administer the wrong application, and neglect or overlook the meaning of the text which weakens the impact of God’s truth in our personal lives as well as others we are teaching.
