Analysis and interpretation – The Nine Billion Names of God
In 1953 Arthur C. Clarke wrote “The Nine Billion Names of God”. This is a science fictive short story where we meet a group of lamas who wants to write the nine billion names of God. Atypically, the lamas will not use the ‘normal’ alphabet; but their own alphabet where they have invented and written in their holy books. In over three centuries they have been typing these names down, and it would take another fifteen thousand years for them to complete the chore. Therefore, they purchase a special computer, Mark V, from a company, which can calculate and write all the letters down. Compared to the fifteen thousand years the

It seems like he sees them as too ‘stupid’ to be able to handle this equipment. He believes that science is greater than religion. He cannot really see the purpose of this task either, but asks the lama anyway and for a second he wonders whether he has offended him. On the other hand, we have the lama who believes that these religious thoughts go far beyond the science world. He knows that the scientists are narrow-minded and do not believe in a world of religion. ”It is somewhat alien your way of thought, so I hope you will listen with an open mind while I explain it.”
Later on in the conversation, the lama talks about this computer eliminating ridiculous combinations. ”For example, no letter must occur more than three times in succession. Three? Surely you mean two. Three is correct: I am afraid it would take too long to explain why, even if you understood our language.”
The lama knows that he will not understand their view at life and so does the scientist. The barrier between these two worlds are simply too excessive. But the lama has come to do business and he hires two engineers to come along to make sure the computer works as intended.
When Chuck tells George the crazy news regarding the monks’ intention with the nine billion names, their scientist brains simply can’t find a reasonable explanation for
The biblical metanarrative touches the storyline of the main book, the Bible, from the beginning from Genesis to the end of Revelation. Throughout the bible there are many stories that have a message and come across to Christians that relate to their life. The bible is one book with many events that tells one big story. There are five acts of the biblical metanarrative consists of which are, Act I: The God of Creation, Act II: Sin Enters the World, Act III: God Covenants with Israel, Act IV: Jesus and the New Covenant, and Act V: The Fellowship of believers. Each of these Acts have stories about the life of Jesus that has a meaning Christians relate to.
The common ground of religions in the world is that they claim the existence of god/gods who holds the power beyond human ability. Each religion explains its existence in their own unique ways and implement it to people’s lifestyle. The film, 330 Million Gods, seeks to understand the Hinduism way of explanation. This documentary mainly focuses on the Hindu concept of divine, religious practices, and the stages of life. Also, the documentary illustrates how Indian lifestyle blends into its religion in the big cities – city of Benares and rural areas – village of Bhith Bhagwanpur. The most interesting points of this film presents to me are the idea of many gods with different sets of ability, how the Hindus practice the religion, and the concept
An alien that’s what I perceived. Each standing without clarity. An extraterrestrial being. Facing me, foreign to me. A supernatural creature. Not like the others. From a different world. Both separated by this invisible dimensions. A familiar fear, I start to feel. Derived from past ignorance. The raw, buzzing thoughts starts to resonate within me. I open my eyes to understand and realize, what others don't. I welcome my abduction, this danger zone is my addiction. For this alien, facing back at me, is not more than a human. Who bleeds red just like me. Vanish the fears, judgements and assumptions. Levitate yourself, like. Instead gravitate to new connections. Differences do
The Tibetans and the Navajo Native Americans are from different cultures. The Tibetan’s have lived intertwined with China for centuries. They tried to free themselves from China rules yet they failed. The 14th Dalai Lama fled China and found exile in India. China to this day has total control over Tibetan people. “Using all the tools of repression to deter and punish Tibetan resistance” as stated on Free Tibet. The people of Tibet are dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The monks and nuns play a vital part in the community, furthermore they are viewed as teachers and mentors. The Chinese did not want the Dalai Lama to have the followers that he had. If a person how any paraphernalia of the Dalai Lama could lead to their incarceration and or torture. The Chinese monitors and controls the religious aspects in Tibet. Consequently, the Chinese government found the devotion of the Tibetans to the Dalai Lama as a danger to their political goals. By way of contrast with the conflict with the Chinese government, the monks live a simple life. The Tibetan monks believes in the liberation of all being, personal enlightenment, compassion and nature around us.
The Bible is composed of many different stories and narratives. Each one of these individual stories contributes to the greater story of the Bible; sometimes called the Grand Story of Scripture. Within each Story, they have elements that define the setting, characters, climax, and themes. The overall Grand Story of Scripture contains these elements in each of the five divisions: prologue, epilogue, and three acts in between.
The interview and response of Dalai Lama revolves around the integration of the integration of the two major religions; Christianity and Buddhism. Lama is so much categorical in responding to his questions because he does not want to cause confusion on the type of integration the interviewer tries to reflect. However, Dalai asserts that if what the interviewer tries to imply is the
The Dalai Lama has also challenged adherents to accept the fate that is given to them and make the greatest use of their reincarnated form. As a young child he was unable to reject the position of ‘Dalai Lama’ however he has managed to utilise this position to the best advantage and has bettered the world through this. He has pushed for the bettering of the world for both religious and secular societies. His messages of peace, tolerance and the renunciation of the desires of anger and revenge have resonated with people globally.
At all times, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism has lived his faith and has been an example for all Buddhist followers to emulate. His steps of the five peace plan outline the transformation for Tibetan Buddhism for a whole for followers in Transformation of the whole of Tibet into a zone of peace, Respect for the Tibetan people’s fundamental human rights and democratic freedom, and commencement of earnest negotiations on the future status of Tibet and of relations between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples. To such he also emphasised that “Nirvāṇa is the cessation (nirodha) of duḥkha because, being a state in which the origins of duḥkha have been abandoned, it ensures that duḥkha will no longer be produced. ”This is further emphasised as “Nirvana can only be reached, not produced, by the Path”..” it transcends the intrinsic nature of matter” - Buddhaghosa, 5th century India in reinstating what the Dalai Lama said. To this the Dalai Lama continually renews the faith in terms of development and extends its
Faith and the Faithless If we do not believe in our faith wholeheartedly, how far can these false prayers take us and can we truly call ourselves faithful? In the book of Matthew, he follows the story of Jesus and his journey to attempt to redeem the people of the earthly kingdom while spreading God's will. On Jesus' pilgrimage he performs miracles for the followers who have a strong conviction such as healing the sick and casting out demons. Jesus granted some of his abilities to his disciples whose task were to help perform miracles, spread the good word, and instill faith in people who were lost in life. However, as we discover in Matthew chapter 17:14-21, the disciples are not able to cast out a destructive demon from a young boy.

The passage reminds us to not be afraid and to trust God. Peter overlooked this when he saw the wind boisterous, which means strong according to Robert Young in his book, Young’s Analytical Concordance to the Bible. There are going to be times of trouble in our lives, just as the disciples went through the vicious storm. After all, storms of life can teach Christians to depend on their savior, just as it teaches the disciples. People end up ‘falling’ because they focus on their fears instead of God. James Montgomery Boice in his commentary The Gospel of Matthew explained, Peter walked on water when he kept his eyes upon Jesus. However, Peter began to sink when he turned away from Jesus and focus on the fear. George Morrison states in his
I never performed a literary analysis. However, this class involves critical thinking also assumptions. Each verse implements that God will judge the godly or righteous will be blessed and prosper. The ungodly will face his wrath. Personally speaking how God has been in my life. Since returning, back to school, I have been hospitalizing twice, one surgery, and the passing of my brother. Nevertheless, I read in Our Daily Bread That King David wrote Psalm 139 while in the midst of crisis. However, I have the faith to never give up on school. God has given me the persevere in scriptures.
Around the world and throughout all the different versions of Christianity, there are so many things that people call “the gospel”. Some say it is the only way to get to Heaven, or that it is a doctrine of damnation that God sent us to right our wrongs. Ravi Zacharias stated in a video sermon what he thinks that the gospel has become when he says, “It became I think cheapened and somehow diluted if not polluted and so an average person who view what is the gospel they say it is the same old thing, you’re a sinner and you’re heading to hell…” (Zacharias). Most individuals in today’s time do not know what God’s true love is or what the real meaning of the gospel is truly because of the situations they have been in during their lives and what society has made it out to be. According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of the word “gospel” is, “The message concerning Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation,” (Webstersdictionary.com). Though this is a technical definition, the Gospel of God is so much more than just teachings. The Gospel can help those who have never met God, since it is the good news that should be preached to everyone, it is how believers go and make more disciples throughout the world, and through it is a way for everyone to connect with God on a personal and spiritual level.
The book explains that a machine known as “Deep thought” was built to answer “the ultimate question of life the universe and everything”. Deep thought is a super computer that took 7.5 million years to answer the question. The computer, 7.5 million years later answered “the answer to life the universe and everything is 42”. The makers of Deep thought (who are actually a pair of interdimensional mice) dissatisfied with the answer make another super computer, Earth.
Biblical Interpretation is important and necessary so that we can understand what the text is saying, what the intended theological message is, and how to personally apply and teach these Scriptural truths to carry forward the Gospel in rescuing others from despair and death to hope and life, thus displaying His glory and growing His Kingdom. It is about finding what God is revealing about Himself and His Son Jesus Christ. Moreover, it is for us to know that God desires to have a relationship with us and for us to be set apart in a covenant relationship with Him to display holy lives that bring Him glory. Interpretation, using hermeneutical principles, help guide us in proper boundaries for interpreting Scripture so that we can reveal the intended meaning of the text. Without this, we run the risk of imposing our own ideas on the text, therefore misinterpreting. Misinterpreting can cause us to miss theological truths, administer the wrong application, and neglect or overlook the meaning of the text which weakens the impact of God’s truth in our personal lives as well as others we are teaching.
