Name: Sara Dougherty Date: 4/10/23 Section: 008 New Testament Bible Study Assignment #2 Interpretation Assignment Passage: Acts 16:6-15 Interpretation Instructions: For this assignment, you will be studying a narrative from the book of Acts. More specifically, you will be studying the story of Lydia in Acts 16:6-15. You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Interpretation that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study . A. Summarize: Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, this passage is made up of both action and dialogue. Thus, this passage is both showing and telling us something. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Thus, they should not be used in your answer for this question. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word. The author tells us the story of Paul’s mission and the journey which he had planned to travel to Asia. The author tells us how and why the spirit wouldn’t allow them to travel there. Paul then had a vision at night of a man that needed help in Macedonia. The vision he had is the reason Paul and the rest of his companions set travel to Macedonia causing them to change their plans. When they arrived, they ministered people over the course of the several days they were there. During this time the Sabbath was happening, and Paul went out to find a place to pray. He then comes across a river and sat with women to preach God’s word. The author says a girl there was named Lydia and she was a believer. The author also states that she was a woman of purple cloth, indicating the fact that she could be wealthy. Paul then baptizes Lydia and the rest of her home. Following this. Lydia asks Paul to stay with her in her home.
B. Identify: Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. You should be able to express this principle in 1-3 sentences. Once again, please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Our take from this message would be understanding the significance of God in the aspect of the Holy Spirit. C. Check: Consult at least one scholarly resource in order to offer support for the principle that you believe the passage is teaching. Please consult the “Commentaries” as well as the “Bible Dictionaries & Handbooks” tabs found on this research guide provided by the Jerry Falwell Library. BIBL 110 Research Guide In this piece the story direction changes two times. Although, the changes are not directly made by Paul himself. Rather, the Holy Spirit brought these changes upon Paul. Gary Burge backs this up in, The Baker illustrated Bible commentary (Burge 1648). One example is the vision that was brought upon Paul. The second is the fact that the Holy Spirit wouldn’t allow them to travel to Asia. The Lord changes Paul’s direction to achieve God’s will that only he can see. Even when they had all intensions to go to Asia and preach God’s word to people, the Lord saw a better route for them. This can explain Paul’s vision as well as the block in them traveling to Asia.
