Upon the patients request I researched the state of Oregon's document of assisted dying and death here is what Oregon's policies are to request a prescription for lethal medications, the Death with Dignity Act requires that a patient voluntarily express their wish to die and must be: an adult (age 18 or older), an Oregon resident, capable of make and communicate health care decisions, and diagnosed with a terminal illness that will lead to death within 6 months. It states Patients meeting these requirements are eligible to request a prescription from a licensed Oregon physician. To receive a prescription for lethal medication, there are steps/procedures you must go through first. The procedures include 1. the patient must make two oral requests to his physician, separated by at least 15 days; 2. the patient must provide a written, witnessed request to his physician (two witnesses); 3. the prescribing physician and a consulting physician must confirm the diagnosis and prognosis; 4. the prescribing physician and a consulting physician must determine whether the patient is capable; 5. if either physician believes the patient's judgment is impaired by a psychiatric or psychological disorder, he must refer the patient for a psychological examination; 6. the prescribing physician must inform the patient of alternatives to assisted suicide, including comfort care, hospice care, and pain control; and 7. the prescribing physician must request, but may not require, the patient to notify his next-of-kin of the prescription request. After reviewing the document of Oregon's assisted death and dying policies I answered the ethics check questions; Number one: It is legal in the state of Oregon. Number 2: I see that it is balanced as the patient has expressed his desires. It is the best option for the patient as they want to leave with the dignity they have left. Number 3: I feel like I will be okay with myself as I know it is what the patient wants and understand from their perspective and situation. Upon reviewing this I feel like I can give the patient this information because it is his or her desire for dying. I respect the patient as they are making a difficult choice because they do not only think about themselves as they make this decision but how it impacts everyone around them such as family or friends. They want to leave the way they want everyone to remember them as not how the cancer took them from their family. I have recorded this process and the decision I have made that I can be true to myself, therapeutic to the patient and professional in all aspects of my employment. Noah Meece, MA student
