This unit focuses on the different perspectives that have an investment in the grievance process. It also explores the process of negotiating labor contracts. This unit ties together many of the competencies that you have developed in the first three units. When completing your work in this unit, keep in mind that labor laws can vary depending on which state you reside in. Therefore, when appropriate, be sure to complete the appropriate research related to your home state. In this unit, you will have the opportunity to learn how to do the following: Examine different perspectives taken into consideration in the grievance process Interpret labor case law and research Apply the process of negotiating labor contracts and its relationship to grievance and arbitration First, we will examine the different perspectives of the company, the union, and the employee in the grievance process. A grievance could relate to just about anything, including pay, working conditions, failure of process, or any aspect of how an employer is treating you. Second, we will explore the process associated with negotiating labor contracts. A labor contract is a binding legal agreement that sets the rules and regulations that will govern the relationship between an employer and an employee. Third, we will investigate labor case law and try to understand its intended purpose. Labor law primarily concerns the rights and responsibilities of unionized employees.
