2 Analyzing Arizona’s Language Development Approach Hello, my name is Danielle Watson, the assignment that I am working on is Analyzing Arizona’s Language Development Approach. According to Arizona Auditor General (2011) the definition of an English Learners is a child who does not speak English or English is not their native language. The difference between the instructional program models ESL, bilingual sheltered English instruction, and structured English immersion is that ESL is students that come from different language backgrounds, but the teacher only speaks English in the classroom. Bilingual is where all the students come from the same language background and the teacher will speak their native language and English. Sheltered English instruction is when English is taught in the skill area of the students, and Sheltered English immersion is when the teachers have reading and listening skills in the student’s native language, and they have a bilingual education (Colorin Colorado, 1993). Arizona’s language Development Approach and the synthesis of the research around ELLs is that it specifically focuses on the language skills of EL students based on the language skills, knowledge, and abilities of a group of EL students based on their preparedness. Student agency is important because it intitles students to have power over their own path to knowledge (Renaissance EdWords Student agency, 2023). The four principles of Arizona’s Language Development Approach are first Asset-Based Behaviors and Expectations this focuses on the student’s strengths in their culture, second is Integrated Instruction in Disciplinary content and language this helps the student promote what they have learned while in the classroom. The third Development approach is Targeted and Explicit language. This is for the teachers and makes sure that they have a clear lesson plan and are learner friendly. The fourth Development approach is the Assessment and Feedback. This is to make sure that the students are given a review or helping them improve and making sure that they have any updated information. Components of Arizona’s approved research-based SEI models are first new-comers this requires that clear instructions are given for all beginners. Second is pull-out, this is when the learners have separate sessions with the instructor. The third is 50-50 Dual language immersion, this is when the students are given equal time with their native language as well as the English language. The last Development approach is Two-hours this is where the student much have 100 minutes in grades 6 th -12 th or 120 minutes in grades K-5 th of the English Lesson.
