Check the “PLSS” box. This will activate the grid lines that depict the U.S. Land Office
and Survey system (see Handout pg. 2-3 and figure 1.3). Give the Township and Range coordinates to the nearest 160-acre section (i.e., to the nearest ¼ section) for each of the following map features: • The summit of Castle Rock, east of Gross Reservoir portion of the map. Township:21, Range: 22 • Eldorado Springs Cemetery near the town of Eldorado Springs along the eastern border of the map. Township:25, Range: 20 Part 2. Scale Problems and Distance Measurement. • Given three maps with these RF scales, which map would show the least amount of detail? Then select the “Geospatial Location” tool at the top of the map and use it to find the grid coordinates for the following locations (note that this tool may also be useful in answering question #3 if you were having problems figuring that out): • Castle Rock: Lat: 39.94 Long:-105.34 • Eldorado Springs Cemetery: Lat: 39.93 Long: -105.27 • Select the “Measuring Tool” and use it to determine the straight-line distance from the top of Green Mtn. (in the northeast quarter of the map) south to the top of South Boulder Peak. • Distance: 2.08 mi • Use the Area Measurement Tool to determine the area of Section 18, T1S, R70W. • Area: 0.294 sq. mi Part 3. Contours. • Locate Bear Peak, in the northeastern quarter of the map. Which side of Bear Peak is steeper, the east or the west? How can you tell?
