Memorandum To: Allen Park School District From: Isabela Gomez, English 135 student, Henry Ford College Date: February 22, 2024 Subject : Research Report -The Effects of social media on mental health in the Allen Park school district Introduction For project 4, I propose to write an informal report on Allen Parks Elementary School District containing the effect social media has on children’s mental health. The report will define the students’ help in recognizing what mental health issues are and what they feel like, evaluate the school's knowledge when it comes to mental health issues and investigate the effects that it brings to their learning. As shown below, through my knowledge and research, I can produce a report that answers my audience's questions and achieves the objectives of Project 4. Problem The Allen Park school system seems not to grasp the issues that mental health problems can reside in children and the adverse effects it has on children. In today's world, social media and other forms of digital communication are constantly at our fingertips, providing us with various channels to connect with others. However, it's ironic that despite this constant "socializing," teenagers often feel more disconnected than ever before. The lack of real human interaction and the constant bombardment of digital content can hurt their emotional well-being. Many students find it overwhelming to deal with the negative aspects of technology, such as the lack of face-to-face communication, the constant comparison to others, and the prevalence of cyberbullying. These issues can take a toll on one's mental and emotional well-being, and it's too much for students to bear. Schools need to recognize when a student is struggling with mental health issues, even if they are not vocalizing it. However, school staff may sometimes lack the proper education
and understanding to help these students effectively. This can make providing the necessary support and care for our needy children challenging. Solution It's common for kids to experience anxiety due to excessive social media usage. To help them cope with this, it's essential to educate them about anxiety, its symptoms, and how to seek help. Please encourage them to take breaks from social media and engage in activities that promote positive mental health. Additionally, provide a supportive and understanding environment where they feel comfortable discussing their struggles and seeking help. Remember, it's crucial to prioritize the mental well-being of our children. Awareness of the issue is also the first step for educators. Fortunately, there are many things educators can do to step up for students in crisis, for example, creating a positive, safe, and affirming environment, expanding social-emotional learning programs, and providing mental health support for students. These are just a few examples, but there are many more. This information will be illustrated in an empirical research report, answering the audience's questions clearly and convincingly. Audience As mentioned, a complex audience of decision-makers, advisers, and implementers will read this report. Each audience group will have its objectives and form its questions to be answered throughout this report. The board of education will be the decision maker, the superintendent, teachers, and counsellors will be the advisors, and the superintendent and administrative staff will be the implementers. The board of education members will read the report since they have complete control over local school matters. Their decision will determine whether any further action will be taken. They may ask the following questions: How does this issue apply to our schools? How much knowledge does our school staff have on the issue? What alternatives are there for this issue? The superintendent is the primary consultant to the Board of Education. He collaborates with teachers, lunchroom coordinators, and the principal to provide advice and ensure the report's details are accurate. They may have some questions, such as why this information is significant to them, whether the facts and statistics are precise, and whether the sources they came from are trustworthy. What type of help do we recommend for the students? Will parents approve of this change? Will the students be okay with making these changes?
