EEE 470/591: Electric Power Devices Fall 2020 Homework #8 Due on November 25 (Wednesday), 2020 at 11:59 PM (MST) Please Submit Your Homework through Canvas Course Website Problem 1 (20 Points) For the system in Figure 1, directional overcurrent relays are used at breakers B12, B21, B23, B32, B34, and B43. Overcurrent relays alone are used at B1 and B4. (a) For a fault at P1, which breakers do not operate? Which breakers should be coordinated? Repeat (a) for a fault at (b) P2, (c) P3. (d) Explain how the system is protected against bus faults. Figure 1. System for Problem 1 Solution to Problem 1 (a) For a fault at P1, breakers B32, B21 do not operate. B23should coordinate with B34 so that B34 operates before B23 (and before B12, and before B1). B4 should coordinate with B43 so that B43 operates before B4. After the above coordination, B34 and B43 are the primary relays for the fault at P1. B23 and B4 are the backup relays for the fault at P1. (b) For a fault at P2, breakers B21, B34 do not operate. B12 should coordinate with B23 so that B23 operates before B12 (and before B1). B43 should coordinate with B32 so that B32 operates before B43 (and before B4). After the above coordination, B23 and B32 are the primary relays for the fault at P2. B12 and B43 are the backup relays for the fault at P2. (c) For a fault at P3, breakers B23, B34 do not operate. B1 should coordinate with B12 so that B12 operates before B1. B32 should coordinate with B21 so that B21 operates before B32 (and before B43, and before B4).
After the above coordination, B12 and B21 are the primary relays for the fault at P3. B1 and B32 are the backup relays for the fault at P3. (d) For a fault at Bus 1, B1 and B21 are the primary relays and operate for this fault. For a fault at Bus 2, B12 and B32 are the primary relays and operate for this fault. For a fault at Bus 3, B23 and B43 are the primary relays and operate for this fault. For a fault at Bus 4, B34 and B4 are the primary relays and operate for this fault. Problem 2 (20 Points) Draw the protective zones for the power system shown in Figure 2. Which circuit breakers should open for a fault at (a) P1, (b) P2, and (c) P3? Figure 2. System for Problem 2
Solution to Problem 2 Protection zones of this system is shown below: (a) For a fault at P1, breakers in zone 3 operate (B12a and B21a). (b) For a fault at P2, breakers in zone 7 operate (B21a, B21b, B23, B24a, B24b). (c) For a fault at P3, breakers in zone 6 and zone 7 operate (B23, B32, B21a, B21b, B24a, B24b).
