Activity 1: Active Listening Each person in their respective group must talk about something that is important to them, for a period of 3-4 minutes. The other group members cannot speak during this time. They have to listen quietly. At the end of the speaking time, each group member should paraphrase what the speaker said. The speaker then clarifies, corrects or confirms what the listener paraphrased. What topics did each group member discuss? How did the listeners do with paraphrasing what the speaker said? From DP: explain why it’s so important to know this skill as you are someone going into the helping professions - It’s important to know how to actively listen because it gives assurance and motivation for the other person to feel safe disclosing information that is important to them. Not only does it benefit them to know I am understanding and comprehending what they are saying, but it also gives me the ability to develop my social awareness of the overall situation. By fully engaging in that conversation, I can build a connection by finding relatability between us, developing rapport, and establishing a sense of comfort. All of these characteristics are essential not only for everyday conversations but also for building relationships with people in a help-centered career.
Activity 2: Empathy Each group should describe the feeling(s) in each situation. My employees are always on my back with some kind of issue. I can’t get my deadlines met when I am dealing with employee issues, and I’m fed up with it! Feeling(s): anger, impatience What words implied this? “always, issue” as well as implied blame on others I’m overloaded with work at the office and at home, and I can’t handle it anymore. Everything is piling up and I don’t know what to do. Feeling(s): anxiety, overwhelmed, confused What words implied this? “overloaded, can’t handle it, don’t know what to do, everything” I am trying my best, and everyone is telling me that I have to do more. I’m disappointed in myself and feel like a failure. Feeling(s): sadness, insecurity, incompetence What words implied this? “everyone, do more, disappointed, failure” My boss asked me to take on another project. I feel like I have to say “yes”, but don’t think I can handle another task and stress. I am afraid that things will begin falling through the cracks. Feeling(s): fear, confused, overwhelmed What words implied this? “feel like I have to, can’t handle, afraid, falling through the cracks” Tomorrow I get to attend a dinner function at the Omni rewarding those employees that received an award this quarter! I am pretty excited about this. Feelings(s): joy, happiness, excitement What words implied this? “I get to, rewarding, excited”
Activity 3: Decision Making PICK ONE OF THE CASES BELOW TO WORK THROUGH YOUR DECISION-MAKING ACTIVITY Scenario 1: There is a winter storm headed to Corpus that has potential to bring freezing rain along with temperatures falling into the high 20’s. The models are split on what areas will receive rain in our area. The areas that get rain will have ice to contend with on the roadways. The areas that don’t won’t have issues. You know the issues with our local weather channels and accuracy on predictions. Sometimes they are correct but often they aren’t quite correct. You are a school superintendent. It is your decision how to handle this issue with your school district. Any day you lose, you have to make up at some point in that semester. You have a few thousand children and staff/faculty you are responsible for. What do you do? Scenario 2: You are the spouse to a wealthy CEO of a large and well-known national company. You have not worked in many years, because there was never a need to work with the kind of money coming into the household. You stumble upon proof that your spouse has been having an affair with someone. What do you do? Scenario 3: You have a dog who has been your companion for the last 10 years. For his breed/size he is considered very old at the end of his lifespan. However, he seems healthy, happy and eats well. At his most recent check-up, the vet advises that he has a tumor. The tumor is malignant, and with that particular cancer, the survival rate for 1 year is 20%. It is hard to see any negative effects it is having at the present time on your dog – he seems fine. The vet said that your dog could try chemotherapy, however it’s incredibly expensive and you are already on a very tight budget. The chemo would only improve the odds of survival for your dog up to 50% for a year. It also makes the dog sick and exhausted during the treatment. What do you do? Scenario 4: You work in a career/job that you really enjoy in a city you love. Your hours in your current position are very flexible and you are pretty independent within your job; you don’t work 8 to 5 Monday through Friday like a normal schedule. Your commute to work is only 10 minutes. One week, you go to a conference for your job in a neighboring town and connect again with a colleague you have known many years. This colleague is the VP of the organization that is hosting where this conference is being held. She tells you there is a position open that is a much higher rank than the one you currently work in and pays more than double the salary. She says she would like to recommend you for the position because you are perfect for it. You could drive the 40 miles to this neighboring town everyday without moving if needed, since you love your city so much. However, the organization will pay for the move if you decided to move to that town. Being that this job is much higher up in the organization and is upper administration, you would have to be in the office 8 to 5 Monday through Friday which is much more than you are currently in the office at the present time. What do you do? Scenario 5: Discuss a problem that one of the group members wants to work through
