Titration Lab Sheet Pre lab 1. What is phenolphthalein? It is a substance used for testing if a substance is a acid or a base. 2. If you place 3 drops of phenolphthalein in a clear liquid, it will turn pink. What does this tell you about the substance? It tells you that the substance is a base. 3. Draw a diagram using H + signs and OH - symbols of a solution that is acidic. Hint: Use the diagram seen in the prelab. 4. What makes your solution in question 3 acidic? The solution is clear therefore it is acidic. 5. In part 1 you are introduced to the term meniscus. What does this mean? The meniscus is how we read the liquid volume in a graduated cylinder, it is the bottom of the curve. What is the volume see in this burette? Remember, use the meniscus. See arrow below. 4.6 is what it reads.
Data Collection 1. Complete the data table making observations for each substance in Part 1. You should use the pictures for the observations. Data Table 1 Trial Amount of HCl Used Initial Burette Reading Final Burette Reading NaOH used. (Final- Initial) Base to acid ratio 1 17 mL .02 .04 34mL 4:5 2 18mL .03 .09 35mL 4:7 3 20mL .06 1 39mL 5:9 2. What does the base to acid ratio tell us? It tells how much was released. 3. What color will the solution of potassium phthalate and phenolphthalein appear? It will be pink. 4. Complete data table 2 and 3 after viewing Part 3 of the presentation. Data Table 2 Trial Amount of KHP Used Initial Burette Reading Final Burette Reading NaOH used. (Final- Initial) 1 1.44g 4.21mL 29.45mL 25.24mL 2 1.39g 2.42mL 27.15mL 24.73mL 3 1.41g 12.20mL 37.53mL 25.33mL
